and 17 in the Chemlstry-Grology Build­ing.
With major issues such as air pollution
m national prominence today, people tend
to Ignore the Utile habits that cause l;he
major problems. Sloppy college kids with
not enough energy to seek out an ashtray
withm five feet of them for the purpose
of keeping their ashes of! the floor can
hardly be heralded for their enthusiasm to
clean up the country.

After a seven-hour blackout October
21, 1969, the college decided to install an

The City Fire Marshall sa1d the light­Ing
system was not essential and therefore
was not required when the building was
completed. However. had he been inspect-
111g it the day the power failed he might
have 511ng a dlfferent tune.
Had lhe power r,11ec1 during the night,
however, the situation might have been
worse.
SAC has invested more than $1.300 for
its ,•mergency lighting system. It may seem
like a huge amount, but as far as safety
ts concerned It Is a tiny sum.
Fortunately, for the college, no one was
hurt when the failure occurred. Some In·
structors continued to conduct classes us­ing
light coming in through the windows.
If the school ever decides to bu.Ud
another building seven stories high of the
same type of design let us hope that It does
not listen to the fire marshall when he
says emergency Ughls are not essential.
